Why WhatsApp, not another app.
The best place for an assistant is the place you already talk to the people who help you.
When we started AskGogo, the obvious move was to build an app. A home screen icon, an onboarding flow, a tab bar. We built none of it, and the reason is simple: in India, and in much of the world, the place people ask for help is already a chat.
You message the plumber. You message the clinic for a slot. Your family group decides dinner. The building secretary posts the maintenance due. The habit of asking someone to do something, and waiting for them to come back with it done, already lives in WhatsApp.
An assistant should meet the habit
A new app asks you to change. You have to remember it exists, open it, learn where things are, and give it notifications it has not earned yet. Most assistants fail before they are useful because they never become part of the day.
A chat asks nothing new. You type the way you would to a person, or you send a voice note in the language you think in. You forward the bill, the ticket, the screenshot. Gogo replies in the same thread, and when something needs your yes, it asks in the same thread, with the details in front of you.
We wanted asking Gogo to feel like asking a capable friend, not like using software.
Chat is good at the hard part: approval
Most of what makes an assistant trustworthy happens at one moment, when it is about to spend money, book something or message another person. Chat is a natural place for that moment. The request is right there, the proposal sits underneath it, and approving is one tap. Later, the whole history is scrollable: what you asked, what Gogo found, what you approved, and the confirmation that came back.
And the web, for the overview
Chat is not good at everything. Seeing every task at once, editing what Gogo remembers, or finding a document from March is easier on a bigger screen. That is why there is a dashboard. You never have to open it, but when you want the overview, it is there, and it shows exactly what the chat did.
So the rule we follow is: ask in chat, check on the web. Everything else is Gogo's job.
